Surface Preparation Guidelines for Intumescent Paint Application on Steel Structures

  1. Primer System Requirements
    After sandblasting treatment, steel surfaces must be coated with a compatible anti-corrosion primer system. We recommend using the “Jinyu” brand epoxy zinc-rich primer combined with epoxy micaceous iron oxide intermediate coat to ensure proper adhesion with the intumescent paint for steel. Both primer and intermediate coats must form a continuous, defect-free film to completely seal the substrate, otherwise it may lead to delamination of the fireproof coating and substrate corrosion.

  2. Alternative Primer Compatibility Testing
    When using other primer systems, compatibility testing must be conducted either by certified laboratories or through on-site brush-out tests to verify proper bonding with the intumescent fireproof coating for steel structures.

  3. Application Restrictions
    The intumescent coating must never be applied directly onto:
    ✓ Unprimed steel surfaces
    ✓ Galvanized coatings
    Direct application may cause coating failure and accelerated steel corrosion.

  4. Pre-Application Inspection
    Prior to applying the hydrocarbon fire resistant intumescent paint, thoroughly inspect for:

    • Humidity: ≤80%.

  4. Reinforcement: Use fiberglass mesh for critical areas.

  • Store in dry, ventilated areas (≥5°C).
