An epoxy mid-coat is the build layer of an epoxy floor system — the coat that turns a sealed slab into a floor with thickness. Its job is to add the film that carries traffic load, to level out minor surface variation, and to hold the finish coat.
KAIDA PAINT® supplies five epoxy mid-coats, in roller-applied and self-leveling types, water-based and solvent-free. This page covers what each one does, how thickness relates to load, and when a project can go straight from primer to top coat. The layers either side of the mid-coat are covered on the epoxy floor primer och epoxigolv topplack pages.

An epoxy mid-coat (also called a build coat, an intermediate coat, or a screed) sits between the primer and the top coat. Three functions:
| Form | Produkt | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Water-based | E336 Vattenbaserad epoxibeläggning för mellanskikt | Water-based systems in occupied or odour-sensitive buildings |
| Solvent-based | E337 Epoxi Mellanbeläggning | Solvent-based systems, where the mid-coat has to match the primer and top coat chemistry |
| Primer and mid-coat in one | E811-2 Lösningsmedelsfri epoxigolvprimer Mid Coating | Builds that combine the sealing and build stages into one operation |
| Self-leveling | E820 Epoxi självutjämnande mellanliggande golvbeläggning | Floors where surface regularity matters and the mid-coat has to flow out and level |
| Lösningsmedelsfri | E822 Lösningsmedelsfri mellanstrykningsfärg | Solvent-free systems, including thick builds |
The decision is driven by how flat the slab has to end up and how much thickness the build needs, not by the colour or the finish.
| Roller-applied mid-coat | Self-leveling mid-coat | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is placed | Rolled out in one or more passes | Poured and spread, then left to flow |
| Surface regularity | Follows the slab profile, including its hollows | Levels minor hollows as it cures |
| Bäst för | Sound, reasonably flat slabs where a thin build is enough | Slabs with slight variation, or floors that must look continuous and seamless |
| In our range | E336 Water-based Epoxy Middle Coating, E337 Epoxy Middle Coating, E822 Solvent-free Intermediate Paint | E820 Epoxi självutjämnande mellanliggande golvbeläggning |
| Skick | Requirement |
|---|---|
| System thickness (all coats) | 0.5–10 mm — per-layer build is set by the specified system and confirmed on the TDS |
| Substrate concrete strength | ≥ C20 |
| Substrate moisture content | ≤ 8% at application; a waterproof layer is required |
| Application temperature | 5–30 °C |
| Relative air humidity | 30–85% |
Scope: a separate mid-coat is part of most specified systems. It can be left out in these cases:
Where the floor will take forklift traffic, point loads, thermal shock or chemical spillage, the mid-coat is the layer that provides the thickness those conditions require — it is not an optional extra.
A mid-coat is defined by its position in the system — it is the build layer between primer and top coat. A self-leveling coat is defined by how it is placed: it is poured and left to flow, so it levels minor surface variation as it cures. A self-leveling product can be used as a mid-coat, and in our range E820 is exactly that.
The full system ranges from 0.5 mm to 10 mm; the per-layer build is set by the system you specify and is stated on the product TDS. Thickness is chosen from the load the floor will carry, not from the floor area.
A self-leveling mid-coat will level minor hollows. Deeper defects, spalled areas and structural cracks are repaired before priming, not filled with the build coat.
Solvent-free builds use E822 Solvent-free Intermediate Paint, or E811-2 where the primer and mid-coat stages are combined. Mixing chemistries between coats is a common cause of intercoat adhesion failure, so the mid-coat is normally specified with the rest of the system.
Per-layer build thickness, recoat window and substrate requirements for each epoxy mid-coat. Tell us the slab condition, the load the floor will carry and the finish you have specified, and we will recommend the build.
KAIDA PAINT® and JINYU PAINT® are brands of the same manufacturing group.
Epoxy resins, curing agents, pigments, fillers and solvents are sourced from established international chemical suppliers. Every incoming batch is inspected and released to production only after it passes the factory’s incoming-material check. Each batch record is filed so that a finished product can be traced back to the materials it was made from.
Formulations are developed and adjusted in the factory laboratory. Each production run is blended to a recorded formula with a fixed mixing ratio and mixing sequence, and the batch is checked for viscosity and gel time before it is released for filling. Formulations are tuned to specific performance targets – adhesion, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance or VOC content – rather than to a single generic specification.
Each batch is tested before packing. Testing covers the properties that determine how the coating performs on site – adhesion, abrasion resistance, hardness, gloss level and solids content – against the product’s technical data sheet. Test reports are issued per batch and can be supplied with the shipment.
Production runs on the factory’s coating lines, where the coatings are mixed in large batches and filled into pails or drums. Every container is labeled with the product code, batch number and production date, and the label carries the KAIDA PAINT® brand, so a delivered container can always be matched back to its batch record.
Color matching is carried out in-house against the factory’s standard color range. Where a project needs a specific shade, a color chip is prepared and submitted to the customer for written approval before production starts, so the delivered material matches what was approved.
Water-based and solvent-free systems are formulated to meet the VOC limits that apply in the destination market. The VOC content of each product is stated in g/L on its technical data sheet, so a specifier can check compliance against the regulation for their own project rather than relying on a general claim.
Technical support covers system selection, substrate assessment, application guidance and fault diagnosis – before, during and after delivery. Where a project requires it, application is carried out by installers, and the team that advised on the specification stays involved during application.
Orders are packed for export with the documents a project needs – technical data sheet, safety data sheet and batch test report. Packing and labeling are adjusted to the requirements of the destination market. Recent projects shipped from the factory include a 10,000 m² food plant floor in Venezuela, an industrial flooring project in Sweden, and a battery plant renovation in Hungary.
