Epoxy Mid-Coat

An epoxy mid-coat is the build layer of an epoxy floor system — the coat that turns a sealed slab into a floor with thickness. Its job is to add the film that carries traffic load, to level out minor surface variation, and to hold the finish coat.

KAIDA PAINT® supplies five epoxy mid-coats, in roller-applied and self-leveling types, water-based and solvent-free. This page covers what each one does, how thickness relates to load, and when a project can go straight from primer to top coat. The layers either side of the mid-coat are covered on the epoxy floor primer e revestimento epóxi para pavimentos pages.

What an Epoxy Mid-Coat Does

An epoxy mid-coat (also called a build coat, an intermediate coat, or a screed) sits between the primer and the top coat. Three functions:

  • Builds the film. The primer seals; the top coat protects. The mid-coat is where the system gains its measurable thickness, and thickness is what resists point loads and abrasion.
  • Levels the surface. Self-leveling mid-coats flow out and fill minor hollows, so the finish coat is not chasing the profile of the slab.
  • Carries the colour and the body. Where a coloured or decorative floor is specified, the mid-coat is usually the layer that establishes the base colour.

Roller-Applied vs Self-Leveling Mid-Coats

The decision is driven by how flat the slab has to end up and how much thickness the build needs, not by the colour or the finish.

Substrate and Site Conditions for a Mid-Coat

EstadoRequirement
System thickness (all coats)0.5–10 mm — per-layer build is set by the specified system and confirmed on the TDS
Substrate concrete strength≥ C20
Substrate moisture content≤ 8% at application; a waterproof layer is required
Application temperature5–30 °C
Relative air humidity30–85%

When a Project Can Skip the Mid-Coat

Scope: a separate mid-coat is part of most specified systems. It can be left out in these cases:

  • The build uses a combined primer / mid-coat product, so one operation performs both roles.
  • The floor is a thin-film sealed or coated floor where no additional film thickness is being specified — for example a light-duty sealed slab, or a coating applied only for dust-proofing.
  • The specification is a single-coat system by design, where the top coat is also the build coat.

Where the floor will take forklift traffic, point loads, thermal shock or chemical spillage, the mid-coat is the layer that provides the thickness those conditions require — it is not an optional extra.

FAQs About Epoxy Mid-Coats

What is the difference between an epoxy mid-coat and a self-leveling coat?

A mid-coat is defined by its position in the system — it is the build layer between primer and top coat. A self-leveling coat is defined by how it is placed: it is poured and left to flow, so it levels minor surface variation as it cures. A self-leveling product can be used as a mid-coat, and in our range E820 is exactly that.

How thick should the mid-coat be?

The full system ranges from 0.5 mm to 10 mm; the per-layer build is set by the system you specify and is stated on the product TDS. Thickness is chosen from the load the floor will carry, not from the floor area.

Can an epoxy mid-coat be used to fill hollows in the slab?

A self-leveling mid-coat will level minor hollows. Deeper defects, spalled areas and structural cracks are repaired before priming, not filled with the build coat.

Which mid-coat goes with a solvent-free system?

Solvent-free builds use E822 Solvent-free Intermediate Paint, or E811-2 where the primer and mid-coat stages are combined. Mixing chemistries between coats is a common cause of intercoat adhesion failure, so the mid-coat is normally specified with the rest of the system.
