Epoxy Floor Primer

An epoxy floor primer is the first coat of an epoxy floor system. Its job is narrow and essential: seal the prepared concrete, consolidate a dusty or absorbent surface, and provide the bond that every following coat depends on. The finish coat can only perform as well as the layer beneath it.

KAIDA PAINT® supplies five epoxy floor primers — penetrating, water-based, solvent-free and anti-static types. This page sets out which substrate each one suits, the site conditions they share, and when a primer can be left out. The layers that follow the primer are covered on the epoxy mid-coat و eoxy floor top coat pages.

What an Epoxy Floor Primer Does

An epoxy floor primer (also called an epoxy primer, or a primer sealer) does three things, in this order:

  • Seals the surface. Concrete is porous. Without a primer, the first build coat is drawn into the slab and leaves a starved, uneven film.
  • Consolidates weak or dusty concrete. A penetrating primer binds loose surface particles so the build coats have something solid to grip.
  • Provides the bond. The primer is the interface between concrete and epoxy. Delamination, blistering and pinholing are usually traced back to this interface, not to the finish.

A primer is not a sealer in the moisture-barrier sense. It does not replace a waterproof layer or a damp-proof membrane on a slab that is still giving off moisture.

Penetrating vs Film-Forming Primers

The choice between a penetrating and a film-forming primer follows from how dense the slab is, not from the finish coat you intend to apply.

When You Can Leave the Primer Out

Scope: a separate primer coat is needed on most projects. It can be omitted only in these cases:

  • The specified build includes a combined primer / mid-coat product, so the sealing and build stages are one operation.
  • The slab is dense, sound and already carries a compatible, fully cured coating that has been prepared and tested for adhesion.

In every other case — absorbent concrete, dusty surfaces, slabs with residual moisture, or any system where the first coat must seal before it builds — a primer is required.

FAQs About Epoxy Floor Primers

Do I always need an epoxy floor primer?

On most concrete floors, yes. A primer is only skippable when the build uses a combined primer / mid-coat product, or when the slab is dense and already coated with a compatible, abrasion-prepared system that has passed an adhesion test.

What is the difference between a penetrating and a film-forming epoxy primer?

A penetrating primer soaks into the concrete and consolidates the surface from within; it suits open, absorbent or dusty slabs. A film-forming primer stays on the surface as a continuous film that the build coats bond to; it suits dense, power-troweled or low-absorption slabs.

Can an epoxy primer go onto a damp concrete slab?

No. Substrate moisture content must be at or below 8% at the time of application, and a waterproof layer is required. A primer is not a moisture barrier — it will not stop a slab that is still giving off moisture from pushing the system off from below.

Which primer do I need for an anti-static floor?

Anti-static builds use a dedicated conductive primer, listed above as Epoxy Anti-Static Floor Coating Primer. The conductive path has to begin at the primer layer, so the primer and the rest of the ESD system must be specified together.

Request the Primer Data Sheet

Coverage, recoat window and substrate requirements for each epoxy floor primer, including the penetration grade and the mixed-viscosity data you need to specify the right type. Tell us the slab condition — age, absorption and moisture reading — and we will recommend the primer.
